Here is a list of things to remember when you are shooting a video of the autocross (or taking pictures):
- Get as close to the course as possible, even ask to stand at a worker station (with spotter); have your positions picked out before the race starts and before workers go out on course
- Also make sure you have a spotter or tell an official if you are going to the side where spectators are not generally standing, you don't want to bring the event to a halt if you are considered a safety risk
- Make sure to get the car waiting for the light and through then end of the run, don't try to cut in at the middle of a run (unless you can catch some spins or excitement!)
- Shoot direct class competitors to make a comparison video later
- Use a good microphone for better sound
- Also try to shoot them from the same spot/angle
- Try to stay as zoomed in on the car as possible
- Cut between runs, don't just swing all around and film more stuff
- Try to keep obstacles like the truck or poles out of the picture
- Be slow and steady as you zoom or pan, use tripod if you can, even for small cameras!
- Try to always have the sun to your back, just like any photography, it looks better in sun than when you are shooting the shadow side of a car
- Ask if you can share some tapes with people that have in car cams, and tape their run and edit in the in car footage later. Maybe bring some extra tapes to just hand out to drivers to put in their camera for a run (if they are willing)
- Shoot lots of people talking and having fun too! It's about racing and people, so you need some human faces in the mix. Go and interview a class winner or maybe the guy that just spun out.
- Take notes or get the results after the event to add in some times or standings in the final videos
